Charitable Trust Plans
In 2012 the Canal & River Trust will take over as the guardian of the waterways in England and Wales bring to an end over 60 years of public ownership.
The move, championed by British Waterways, will attract new investment, secure jobs and give the public a greater say in the running of their local canal or river.
The move is backed by government and has the support of a wide range of waterway stakeholders.
Since putting the proposals forward in 2009, much has been achieved by many within and outside of British Waterways. A timeline of the journey can be found on Waterscape
