Freedom of Information Act

British Waterways prides itself on being open and accountable with its many stakeholders. The Freedom of Information Act 2000 is legislation that ensures public authorities are proactive in providing information that is requested. We abide by this Act.

British Waterways has adopted the Information Commissioner's Office's new Model Publication Scheme for 2009. Details of the publication scheme can be found at http://www.ico.gov.uk/Home/what_we_cover/freedom_of_information/ publication_schemes/publication_schemes_eng.aspx.

Going forward British Waterways will be publishing information in accordance with this scheme.

Sometimes we may have to withhold information if we consider that it is necessary to do so for reasons such as confidentiality, national security and commercial sensitivity or for some other legitimate reason. When considering whether or not we have to withhold information we must take into account matters such as the Freedom of Information Act, the Environmental Information Regulations, the Data Protection Act and public interest. When information is withheld we will explain why we have done so.
