A map of the route section 4 - Pier Head Channel

Section Four:

Pier Head and Mann Island

The fourth and final section of the canal link crosses the Pier Head and terminates at Canning Dock. Pre-construction of the link, there was no waterway link between the Central Dock area and the South Docks through the Pier Head. This section of the scheme involved the construction of 500 linear metres of new open canal basins, tunnels and a lock structure.

The canal works required for this section comprised of five elements:

  • Two open basins on Pier Head, one in front of the Liver Building, one in front of the Port of Liverpool Building.
  • Two tunnel sections, to allow pedestrian access across the Pier Head and to open up large areas of public realm for a variety of uses.
  • A basin at Mann Island.
  • Mann Island Lock into Canning Dock.
  • Extensive public realm landscaping along the route of the canal.
