Section Two:
Central Docks Channel
The second section of the canal link is between Trafalgar Dock and the Princes Half Tide Dock. Significant areas of Trafalgar and West Waterloo Docks were in-filled and used as registered land fill by the dock operator in the early 1990s, following the decline in commercial shipping activity. Only the north section of Trafalgar Dock is retained in water.
A small open channel transferring compensation water from the northern docks into West Waterloo Dock existed along the eastern dock wall pre-construction of the canal link. This channel had an insufficient water profile for canal boat navigation.
The new works required for this section comprised of two elements:
- A new 6.5m wide channel through Trafalgar Dock and the northern end of West Waterloo Dock.
- A new bridge crossing over the new channel at the dock passage between Trafalgar and West Waterloo Dock.
