Water Quality

Working with the EA, local authorities and other stakeholders, British Waterways is improving the water quality of the network of canals and rivers in London. The next phase of this work includes dredging part of the River Lee Navigation between Tottenham and Lea Bridge Road of its contaminated silts, which will improve the ecological corridor creating a better environment for wildlife to flourish.

Utilities and Energy

The canals and waterways have for some time been recognised as important routes and corridors for utilities such as gas, water, electric and telecoms, which meet demand for housing and industry. British Waterways London and its partners are looking to facilitate both sustainably and sensitively the use of these corridors to support London’s growth. In addition, the waterways have further potential for electricity generation, heating and cooling.
