First Mile Posts Set For Unveiling

22 October 2008

A collaboration between the Bradford Motor Education Project (BMEP), British Waterways (BW), the Leeds & Liverpool Canal Society and the Inland Waterways Association (IWA), has resulted in the re-installing of mile posts along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.

To mark the achievement, Mike Clarke, president of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal Society, will be officially unveiling the mile posts at a ceremony to be held tomorrow at 12 midday at the end of Dockfield Road, Shipley.

The project has been co-ordinated by members of Dreamweavers (Marine Division of BMEP), which supports the education, training and personal development of young people. Two senior trainees have been involved in all aspects of pattern making, casting of the mile plates, surveying the sites and installation of the posts. The first phase will be completed between Shipley and Bingley with a view to completing the length between Apperley Bridge and Skipton.

Trevor Roberts, chairman of the BMEP, said: "The refurbishment and replacement of mile, half and quarter mile posts on the towpath has been an excellent way of involving young people to interact with the canal, and to be involved in something with such significance. Everyone who has helped support this project can be thoroughly proud of what has been achieved so far."

Judy Jones, heritage advisor for British Waterways Yorkshire said: "Caring for this living, working heritage demands a unique combination of skills and expertise. This is a period of great renaissance for canals and this project serves to highlight the importance of retaining those key heritage features around the waterways and to make sure that they are protected for the future."

The first post to be replaced is to be at the front door of Carnaud Metal Box who have given considerable support in the manufacturing of the mile posts.

A full display outlining the various aspects of the project will be shown at the marina on Wharf Street, Shipley (BD17 7BW). Light refreshments will be available after the ceremony.
