British Waterways advises of risks from algae

20 August 2010

British Waterways is asking visitors to the Leeds & Liverpool Canal & its reservoirs to continue to enjoy the waterways but avoid contact with the water due to a potential bloom of blue-green algae on the canal.

Blue-green algae occur naturally in many inland freshwaters. Occasionally, the numbers of blue-green algae become excessive, resulting in a ‘bloom’ which can colour the water green, blue-green or greenish brown. Sometimes algal blooms cause paint-like or jelly-like scums. Some blue-green algae are capable of producing toxins, but blue-green algal blooms and scums are not always toxic and it is not possible to tell from its appearance whether a bloom or scum is harmful.

Due to the uncertainty surrounding the toxicity of blue-green algal blooms, British Waterways is encouraging canal and towpath users, their children and pets to avoid contact with the water in the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. Direct contact with the algae may cause allergic reactions including itchy eyes, skin irritation and hay fever like symptoms.

Cath Ferguson Environment Manager for British Waterways said: “If members of the public do come into contact with blue-green algae affected water, they should remove all contaminated clothing and wash all exposed skin with clean water as soon as possible, and particularly before eating or drinking. If they are in any doubt about their welfare after contact with algae, they should seek medical advice. Farmers and pet owners should ensure that their animals do not have access to affected water”.

The potential bloom of blue-green algae may persist on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal whilst the weather remains warm. The location and extent of the bloom and any scums may vary with wind, weather and water movements so visitors to the canal are being asked to remain vigilant.
