Olympic honour for Pontcysyllte Aqueduct

Thomas Telford’s magnificent Pontcysyllte Aqueduct has been named as one of the alternative modes of transport that will be used during the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay. The aqueduct is one of just a few landmarks on the route of the Olympic Flame announced today by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). The Olympic Flame will travel over the aqueduct on 30 May 2012.

Freezing forecast is brrr-illiant for bats

Bats are doing well on our canals and rivers according to the results of British Waterways' annual Wildlife Survey. Today’s results show a 9 per cent increase in the numbers of bats seen, and while we may be dreading a forecast for a freezing winter, it is more good news for these elusive mammals which actually rely on the cold to survive.

Help revamp Hanwell Flight

British Waterways is calling for local people to get outdoors, get active and make a difference to the historic Hanwell Flight of locks on Sunday 23 October 2011. Volunteers will be able to help refurbish and paint fences and cut back vegetation alongside the Grand Union Canal.
