Britain's canals and rivers are brimming to the full with young wildlife as parents take advantage of the warm weather and long summer days to raise their young, making now the perfect time to take part in British Waterways’ Wildlife Survey.

Alien moths vacuumed out of trees to save waterside woodland

British Waterways is working to halt the spread of the invasive non-native oak processionary moth along the leafy Grand Union Canal at Brentford. The moths are the scourge of English oak trees, stripping them of foliage which can ultimately cause the trees to die. As pesticides are not allowed to be used near water, the creatures will be ‘hoovered’ out of the trees by specialist workers.

British Waterways is asking visitors to the Macclesfield Canal to continue to enjoy the waterways but avoid contact with the water due to a potential bloom of blue-green algae on the canal.

On Wednesday 27 July, British Waterways will be holding an open day at the lodge of the Holburne Museum in Bath to explain how local volunteers can help children aged between 7 and 11 find out more about their local waterway.

Volunteers have shown the way as British Waterways today (21 July 2011) publishes its last Annual Report & Accounts before its historic canals, rivers and docks in England and Wales are transferred into a new charity. The number of people volunteering for the waterways has increased to more than 24,000 volunteering days – a three-fold increase since 2007.

Volunteers begin work on revamp of Hanwell Flight
