Olympic honour for Pontcysyllte Aqueduct

Thomas Telford’s magnificent Pontcysyllte Aqueduct has been named as one of the alternative modes of transport that will be used during the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay. The aqueduct is one of just a few landmarks on the route of the Olympic Flame announced today by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). The Olympic Flame will travel over the aqueduct on 30 May 2012.

Freezing forecast is brrr-illiant for bats

Bats are doing well on our canals and rivers according to the results of British Waterways' annual Wildlife Survey. Today’s results show a 9 per cent increase in the numbers of bats seen, and while we may be dreading a forecast for a freezing winter, it is more good news for these elusive mammals which actually rely on the cold to survive.

The transition trustees of the new charity being established to tend 2,000 miles of canals and rivers in England and Wales from April 2012 have today announced that it will be called the Canal & River Trust (or Glandwr Cymru in Wales) and have unveiled its new symbol.
Reed warblers - a sound of the waterways

The elusive reed warbler is alive and well on the UK’s navigations, research from the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) shows. Numbers of the birds have been increasing on manmade canals and rivers, despite an overall decline in the species nationwide.
