Waterways 'lock' to the future as new canal era dawns

Visitors will get the chance to see the canals from a whole new angle at open days during this winter’s repairs and maintenance programme. Descend into a drained canal, watch lock gates being craned in and out, and learn more about the craftsmanship and engineering skills needed to keep our waterways heritage in working order.

The number of people volunteering for the waterways has increased to more than 24,000 volunteering days – a three-fold increase since 2007.
