Ruth Ruderham has been appointed as the first ever head of fundraising for the New Waterways Charity, which will manage the canals and rivers in England and Wales. This latest announcement follows last week’s news that transition trustees have been selected for the charity, which is expected to launch in 2012.
New trustees announced to lead waterways into new sector

The founding trustees have been appointed for the new waterways charity that will take over the running of British Waterways’ canals, rivers and docks in England and Wales from April 2012. Working closely with British Waterways’ Board until the new charity takes control, the eight trustees bring a wealth of senior level experience of managing heritage, volunteering, leisure, boating and commercial interests.

March and April this year have been the second driest in 100 years and British Waterways has experienced exceptionally high numbers of boaters taking to the nation’s canals to enjoy the warm weather and additional holidays. Despite this, water resources are holding up well across most of the country.
British Waterways announces proposed winter stoppage programme

British Waterways has today published its proposed winter stoppage schedule for 2011/12. The proposed programme consists of 212 stoppages which will take place between 7 November 2011 and 9 March 2012, with a two-week Christmas break between 21 December 2011 and 4 January 2012.
Britain’s historic waterways ‘access’ the digital age

British Waterways is launching a national project to keep a real-time virtual picture of the condition of its towpaths and any obstructions to access. This will provide valuable information for people with restricted mobility, as well as families with buggies, cyclists and other towpath users. The thousands of visitors who enjoy the canals are being called upon to play their part in the project.

British Waterways is today encouraging people to take part in its Wildlife Survey – putting creatures living in and along our canals and rivers on the map. This year’s survey highlights bats - Britain’s only flying mammal whose numbers have dramatically declined since the 1950s.
