Olympic boat party to join London’s 2012 celebrations

Boaters are today invited to sign up for Britain’s biggest waterborne street party and become part of a flotilla of hundreds of boats that are anticipated to arrive in London in time for the 2012 Olympics.

Since the March 2010 National Boat Check, licence evasion across British Waterways’ waterways in England and Wales has remained stable, with 95.1 per cent of boats holding licences.

Lloyds Banking Group has appointed Price Waterhouse Coopers as administrators to the Waterside Pub Partnership (WPP) following a failure to agree further financing. Scottish & Newcastle Pub Company (S&NPC) will no longer act as managing agents for the 17 pubs affected.

Boating in London during summer 2012

From 9am on 19 April 2011, an online booking system will enable boaters to reserve a visitor mooring on London’s waterways during summer 2012. This is in response to research which indicates that there will be strong demand for mooring in the Capital throughout the Olympic Games.

Appointment of chairs to trial Local Waterway Partnerships in the West Midlands and North West

Chairs have been appointed to the two trial Local Waterway Partnerships, which will advise and influence the management of canals and rivers in the West Midlands and North West. These trial Partnerships, alongside a third trial already underway on the Kennet & Avon Canal, will work with local waterway managers until the new waterways charity becomes fully operational in 2012.

As part of its annual Heritage at Risk report, English Heritage is embarking on a project to find out how much of the country’s industrial heritage is in danger of neglect, decay or even demolition and to raise the debate about what needs saving and how. They are looking for any visible reminders of the Industrial Revolution, that great era spanning from 1750 to the First World War when Britain led the world.

British Waterways welcomes yesterday’s Judgment made in Bristol County Court in which His Honour Deputy Judge O’Malley said he favoured British Waterways’ interpretation of Section 17 of the British Waterways Act 1995 (relating to Continuous Cruising). In doing so, he found that the Defendant, Mr Davies (who lives on his boat), had not complied with the requirements of the 1995 Act and that British Waterways was justified in bringing the legal proceedings against him.

The Government has today (Monday 28 February 2011) announced its preference for a phased transfer of state-owned waterways in England and Wales into the planned new waterway charity, with British Waterways’ canals and rivers moving in 2012 and the Environment Agency (EA) navigations moving in 2015.
