British Waterways has today, 23 February 2011, appointed Itasca Locations as its national film location management partner, to raise the profile of its waterways and properties across England and Wales to the film and photographic industry.

British Waterways is using its annual spring clean of the canals, Towpath Tidy, to launch regular waterways volunteering parties across the country. These informal groups will meet at least once a month, providing friends, family and strangers the chance to work together on a variety of tasks, from environment management and conservation work to painting locks and sprucing up sites across the country.
British Waterways launches new National Angling Advisory Group

British Waterways has launched a National Angling Advisory Group in order to gain valuable feedback on its work. The members have been chosen for their individual expertise in angling, their knowledge of specific geographical regions and their experience of working in the charitable sector.
Waterways funding announced

Defra has today (20 December 2010) announced that its grant to British Waterways next year will be £41.5m. This is a reduction of £9.8m (or 19%) from the 2010/11 baseline grant of £51.3m. Given that Government funding makes up approximately half of the net spend on the waterways, this will translate into an effective cut of resource available of about 12% in 2011/12.
British Waterways boat licence changes for 2011

British Waterways is due to make changes to boat licensing in 2011. Straightforward price changes will take effect from April 2011. The timing of other changes, subject to consultation, will be implemented as soon as our IT systems can be amended, which will not be before April.

This winter members of the public are being given the opportunity to experience a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of restoration repairs to their local canal or river. The open days are part of a £50m vital makeover of dozens of historic locks, bridges and aqueducts, as well as the hanging of over 100 handcrafted oak lock gates.

Bumper year for kingfishers on the canal

Kingfishers, newts, toads and otters, have all been spotted in record numbers on Britain’s canals and rivers in this year’s national Waterways Wildlife Survey. Sightings of these much-loved British species have soared, with records of our celebrated river royalty, the kingfisher, jumping by more than 200%.
