AINA conference focuses on future for inland waterways

Against the backdrop of forthcoming major budget cuts to publicly-funded waterways, AINA's conference will address in particular, the Government's decision to transfer the waterways in England and Wales which are cared for by British Waterways to a new charitable body – a move which represents the biggest change in the management of inland waterways since nationalisation and the formation of British Waterways in the early 1960s.

British Waterways welcomes the UK Government’s announcement today of its intention to transfer British Waterways’ inland waterways in England and Wales into a new charitable body. The move, promoted by British Waterways for the last 18 months, will be the biggest shake up of the waterways since nationalisation in 1948. It will attract new investment, secure jobs and give the public greater involvement in the running of their local canal or river.

British Waterways has enlisted the help of 2mm-long weevils in its battle against a particularly problematic North American water weed. The creatures are to be released into the Bridgwater & Taunton Canal at Maunsel Lock in Somerset in order to eat the invader weed - water fern (Azolla filiculoides).

British Waterways has welcomed a share of a £10,000 grant from The Waterway Trust’s Small Grants Scheme to support a number of important wildlife habitat improvements. The annual awards support community-led environmental, access, education and activity projects taking place along the UK's waterways. This year’s grant will help projects focussed on the waterway birds that rely on our network of rivers and canals to live and breed, and will be shared between seven new projects:
