Controlling litter

Helping prevent littering and the collection of litter represents an increasing challenge to us as it does most public areas. Our visitors and local communities quite rightly want to enjoy clean and attractive waterways and our long-term approach is to work with Local Authorities and community groups to encourage the public to take their litter home.

Each year we work with hundreds of volunteers who join our office and bankside staff in our annual spring clean, Towpath Tidy, removing on average around 150 tonnes of litter. Waterscape.com contains more details of how to volunteer for Towpath Tidy, which takes place in the spring each year, on their volunteering pages.
