Lowland Canals
Freight Action Plan
British Waterways Scotland in partnership with the Scottish Executive, East Dunbartonshire Council, West Lothian Council, West Dunbartonshire Council, Glasgow City Council, North Lanarkshire Council and Scottish Enterprise has established a freight project group for the Lowland Canals as part of the Lowland Canals Steering Group initiative. The freight project group is to ensure a co-ordinated approach between Local authorities, us and Scottish Enterprise in developing freight on the Lowland Canals network.
Milton Resources has been appointed as a consultant to the freight project group to gather evidence of existing canal side infrastructure/facilities which could be used for freight by businesses located close to the Lowland Canals.
A trial was conducted in 2005 using a Leeds and Liverpool barge which transported several tonnes of electronic and electrical waste from Glasgow and Bishopbriggs to Twechar as part of a plan to establish a recycling centre at Twechar.
