Roll Up, Roll Up For Summer Fun At The Falkirk Wheel

4 August 2005

The Falkirk Wheel won't be the only thing turning on August 6th and 7th when classic cars, quad bikes, bicycles and go-karts turn up at one of Scotland's top tourist attractions.

Organised as part of The Wheel's summer of fun programme, the "Wheely Weekend" will keep children of all ages entertained as a whole host of attractions have been organised to help banish boredom from the school holidays.

Visitors will not only be able to enjoy a fantastic cruise on The Falkirk Wheel in one of the many trip boats available, from noon until 4 p.m. they will get the opportunity to admire a convoy of classic cars, get tips on how to make their own bicycles secure this summer and try their hand at quad biking.

Commenting on the weekend, Richard Millar, Service and Business Development Manager, at British Waterways Scotland, said: "With the summer holidays in full swing it can be difficult to find fun and interesting things to do to keep the whole family entertained. That is why we have organised a number of weekends packed full of fun that will not only amuse the children but be enjoyable for all the family."

Thanks to Stirling Classic Car Association and Bo'ness Motor Museum, visitors will be able to take a seat behind the wheel of James Bond's favourite car, an Aston Martin, as well as a 1912 Overland, a Morris 1000 van and a 1936 Austin.

Although visitors won't be able to drive the four-wheeled classic cars they will be able to bring along their own two-wheels to get security stamped.

Officers from Central Scotland Police will be on site to put the brakes on bike theft by offering cycling enthusiasts the opportunity to get their bicycle security marked, helping to make it a less attractive 'gift' for thieves.

However, if you prefer your bike to be fully automatic, and visit The Falkirk Wheel on Sunday, you will be given the opportunity to zoom around an inflatable track in a quad bike.

Local company, Time 4 Fun, will be bring three 50cc bikes to The Wheel, providing children, aged three years and over, with the opportunity to take a spin for just £4.

A special stand will also provide visitors with the chance to sit in a go-kart and find out more about Xtreme Karting - Central Scotland's only karting facility.

In addition to the special weekend's activities, visitors to The Falkirk Wheel can also learn more about the world's first rotating boat lift and the canal network from the interactive exhibitions in the centre and on the interpretive panels around the basin, while the kids can create their own adventures in the Irn Bru Fun Factory.
