Canals In The Spotlight As Waterways Group Meets In Crinan

Scotland?s canal network will be in the spotlight this month when the British Waterways Scotland Group meets in Argyll to discuss all aspects of the country?s inland waterways.
Members of the public with an interest in the development of the canal network are encouraged to attend the public meeting at The Crinan Hotel on Thursday 19th May, to share their views.
The British Waterways Scotland Group is a non-statutory advisory group established by British Waterways in September 2000 to support the development of the business in Scotland within the devolved political environment. The Group, which meets three to four times per year in areas where the canal has an impact on the community, is chaired by Campbell Christie with the membership including a number of experienced individuals from private and public life who can contribute to Scotland?s canal network (full list in notes to editors).
Commenting on the meeting Campbell Christie said: ?Over the past four years members of the Scotland Group have used their vast and diverse experience to help realize the potential of Scotland?s canal network, providing invaluable advice on important matters relating to the development of our inland waterways.
?It is crucial, however, that all parties with an interest in Scotland?s canals are given an opportunity to help shape the development of our waterways and as such I would urge any interested individuals to come along to the public meeting in Crinan to share their views.?

British Waterways Scotland
Responsibility for inland waterways in Scotland is a devolved matter, with funding for British Waterways? Scottish activities coming from the Scottish Executive. In Scotland the 137 mile (220km) canal network includes the Caledonian, Crinan, Forth & Clyde, Union and Monkland canals.
British Waterways Scotlandworks in partnerships with local authorities, voluntary groups, private companies and other government agencies to protect and enhance the waterways and benefit the communities through which they run.
The organization balances the conservation of the country?s heritage and environment with developing commercial opportunities to generate income to reinvest in the waterways for further sustainable regeneration.
