British Waterways Scotland
Responsibility for inland waterways in Scotland is a devolved matter, with funding for British Waterways' Scottish activities coming from the Scottish Executive. In Scotland the 137-mile (220km) canal network includes the Caledonian, Crinan, Forth & Clyde, Union and Monkland canals.
British Waterways Scotlandworks in partnerships with local authorities, voluntary groups, private companies and other government agencies to protect and enhance the waterways and benefit the communities through which they run.
The organisation balances the conservation of the country?s heritage and environment with developing commercial opportunities to generate income to reinvest in the waterways for further sustainable regeneration. Scotland?s canals are currently undergoing a period of intense regeneration activity.
Completion of The Millennium Link project was officially marked by Her Majesty The Queen on 24 May 2002 at The Falkirk Wheel. The ?84.5 million project restored navigation on Scotland?s historic Forth & Clyde and Union canals and, through regeneration, is creating a corridor of activity and new economic opportunity across central Scotland.
The Falkirk Wheel is the world?s first rotating boat lift.
The Millennium Link and The Falkirk Wheel has been funded by a partnership including The Millennium Commission The European Regional Development Fund, Scottish Enterprise Network, seven local authorities and The Waterways Trust Scotland
Funders who made this project possible have also provided a major catalyst for the wider regeneration and economic development of the canal corridor.
