Competition puts Glasgow photographers in the frame

5 May 2005

Amateur photographers in Glasgow are being urged to capture the magnificent Lowland waterways on film as part of a prestigious competition based around the Forth & Clyde and Union canals.

Now in its third year, The Lowland Canals Photographic competition aims to highlight the wealth of stunning scenery, wildlife and leisure activities on the country?s newly restored inland waterways.   Organisers British Waterways will choose the best images when the competition closes on Tuesday 11th October.

In addition to a top prize of ?250, winning entrants could see their images go on public display.    Last year?s winning photograph of boats at Bowling Harbour was used in a variety of publications promoting the delights of the Lowland canal network.

Commenting on the competition, Richard Millar, Service and Business Development Manager at British Waterways said: ?From boating, canoeing and walking to angling and cycling, Scotland?s Lowland canals offer a host of leisure opportunities in some outstanding locations.   Over the past few year?s Scotland?s amateur photographers have captured a vast range of activities on film and I have no doubt this year?s competition will see even more stunning images of our newly reopened waterways.?

All images must have been taken since the canal reopening in May 2001 and must show some kind of recreation activity on either the Forth & Clyde or Union canals.   The competition is open to all UK residents who are bona fide amateur photographers.

Responsibility for inland waterways in Scotland is a devolved matter, with funding for British Waterways? Scottish activities coming from the Scottish Executive.   In Scotland the 137 mile (220km) canal network includes the Caledonian, Crinan, Forth & Clyde, Union and Monkland canals.

British Waterways Scotlandworks in partnerships with local authorities, voluntary groups, private companies and other government agencies to protect and enhance the waterways and benefit the communities through which they run.

The organisation balances the conservation of the country?s heritage and environment with developing commercial opportunities to generate income to reinvest in the waterways for further sustainable regeneration.   Scotland?s canals are currently undergoing a period of intense regeneration activity.
