New Management Structure At British Waterways Scotland

? Customer service and delivery at heart of all activities

As part of the drive to deliver better service to all its customers, British Waterways has adjusted the way it manages its business in Scotland, with a reorganised Scotland Management Team adopting an integrated, Scotland wide approach which will enable local teams to concentrate on delivery.

Scotland?s waterways have undergone a huge restoration effort over the past few years and the ambition now is to focus more closely on customer service and delivery to create an expanded, vibrant and largely self sufficient waterway network which will be used by twice as many people in 2012 as it was in 2002.

Under the new structure, former Lowlands Manager, Richard Millar, will take up the newly created position of Service and Business Development Manager, with responsibility for BW Scotland Leisure Business Area, including the overall performance of The Falkirk Wheel attraction.   Pam Swanson will take on the role of Customer Service Manager, ensuring that customer service is the focus for all British Waterways activities in Scotland.

From an operational perspective Chief Engineer Scotland, George Ballinger, will be responsible for creating, managing and delivering a Scotland wide Asset Management and Maintenance Programme.  As Property and Development Manager, Norrie Courts will manage the Property Business Area which includes property development, investment, estate management, ventures and town planning.

Finance Controller, John Wallace, is responsible for financial management, control and reporting, while Legal and Corporate Affairs Manager Nicola Christie has responsibility for all legal and corporate affairs issues with a key task including internal communications.

Commenting on the reorganisation, Jim Stirling, British Waterways Director Scotland said; ?Through the hard work and commitment of our teams here in Scotland and the strong support from the Scottish Executive and other public sector partners, British Waterways Scotland has continued to grow its income, develop its customer base and improve the waterways.

?This reorganisation of the Scotland Management Team will allow us to build on the progress we have made and focus our business and our efforts on delivery for our customers, our partners and our people.?

British Waterways Scotland

Responsibility for inland waterways in Scotland is a devolved matter, with funding for British Waterways? Scottish activities coming from the Scottish Executive.  In Scotland the 137 mile (220km) canal network includes the Caledonian, Crinan, Forth & Clyde, Union and Monkland canals.

British Waterways Scotland works in partnerships with local authorities, voluntary groups, private companies and other government agencies to protect and enhance the waterways and benefit the communities through which they run.

The organisation balances the conservation of the country?s heritage and environment with developing commercial opportunities to generate income to reinvest in the waterways for further sustainable regeneration.  Scotland?s canals are currently undergoing a period of intense regeneration activity.
