Ghostly Goings On At The Falkirk Wheel

28 October 2004

Visitors to the leading visitor attraction are being urged to put on their best Halloween costumes for the two special trips at 12pm and 1.00pm on Sunday 31st October.    And for the brave soul with the best outfit there will be a special Halloween prize.

"We?re looking for some truly fearless visitors to venture out onto the waterways this Halloween," says Claire Macnair from The Falkirk Wheel.    "There will be a ghoulish theme throughout the day and it's worth remembering that the boat trips run directly underneath the historic Antonine Wall, so there is always the chance passengers may glimpse a few ghostly Roman Centurions during their visit!"

In addition to the fancy dress boat trips, younger visitors can role up their sleeves and try their hand at dooking for apples while the gift shop will be selling a range of spooky Halloween items.  And for any visitors looking for a snack the caf? will be serving pumpkin soup and ghostly ghoulash!

Anyone looking to book a space on a boat trip (including the fancy dress trips) should phone the booking line on 08700-500 208.

In addition to the spectacular boat trips, visitors to The Falkirk Wheel can also learn more about the world?s first rotating boat lift and the canal network from the interactive exhibitions in the centre and on the interpretive panels around the basin, while the kids can create their own adventures in the Irn Bru Fun Factory.

Entry to the Visitor Centre and The Irn-Bru Fun Factory is free.  Boat trips on The Falkirk Wheel cost ?8 for adults, ?4 for children and ?6 concession. Children under five go free.   A family ticket (2 adults and 2 children) is priced at ?21.    Further information on The Falkirk Wheel can be found at www.thefalkirkwheel.co.uk.

British Waterways Scotland

Responsibility for inland waterways in Scotland is a devolved matter, with funding for British Waterways' Scottish activities coming from the Scottish Executive. In Scotland the 137-mile (220km) canal network includes the Caledonian, Crinan, Forth & Clyde, Union and Monkland canals.

British Waterways Scotland works in partnerships with local authorities, voluntary groups, private companies and other government agencies to protect and enhance the waterways and benefit the communities through which they run.

The organisation balances the conservation of the country?s heritage and environment with developing commercial opportunities to generate income to reinvest in the waterways for further sustainable regeneration. Scotland?s canals are currently undergoing a period of intense regeneration activity.

The Millennium Link

Completion of The Millennium Link project was officially marked by Her Majesty The Queen on 24 May 2002 at The Falkirk Wheel. The ?84.5 million project restored navigation on Scotland?s historic Forth & Clyde and Union canals and, through regeneration, is creating a corridor of activity and new economic opportunity across central Scotland.

The Falkirk Wheel is the world?s first rotating boat lift.

The Millennium Link and The Falkirk Wheel has been funded by a partnership including The Millennium Commission The European Regional Development Fund, Scottish Enterprise Network, seven local authorities and The Waterways Trust Scotland

Funders who made this project possible have also provided a major catalyst for the wider regeneration and economic development of the canal corridor.
