Lowland Canals Reclassified as Cruising Canals

Following a public consultation, the Scottish Government has reclassified the Forth & Clyde and Union canals as 'cruising' waterways.

Scottish Ministers intend to make an Order under the Transport Act 1968 to reclassify the Forth & Clyde Canal and Union Canal as cruising waterways.

One hundred local schoolchildren launched a paper boat on The Falkirk Wheel last wednesday to celebrate the forthcoming start of construction on a mini canal and outdoor classroom at the world’s only rotating boatlift.

On the last weekend in September almost 15,000 people took to the Union Canal towpath and The Falkirk Wheel to watch a spectacular procession of over 60 modern and historic craft as they journeyed the 32 mile length of the Union Canal. This was in celebration of the tenth anniversary of the reopening of the pretty waterway which was made possible by the £86.5m Millennium Link Project in 2000.

BW Scotland Budget statement

Record turnout for Bigman2 festival

An estimated 4000 visitors turned out for the second Bigman event held on the Forth & Clyde Canal at Maryhill Locks, on Sunday 20 September. This is a fantastic increase on the 2500 people who attented last year's festival.
