Anderton
The Anderton Boat Lift underwent a £7million renovation, reopening as a visitor attraction in March 2002. Following its success, we have continued to develop the site, building a brand new Operations Centre and beautifully landscaped gardens. Each year over 100,000 visitors are able to enjoy the Anderton Experience, this Quality Assured visitor attraction, provides the public with a unique opportunity to learn about the history and significance of the worlds first and England's only working boat lift.
The Edwin Clark Trip Boat enables visitors to experience the boat lift, in the same way as a boater. Aboard the boat passengers can take a historic journey through time, as the boat master retells an interesting history. Over looking the site, there is a glass frontage café and gift shop, where souvenirs and refreshments can be purchased. Anderton is a fantastic venue for events, the boat lift offers a perfect backdrop for outdoor activities and conferences; last year over two and a half thousand people attended our bonfire night celebrations.
Designed by Edwin Clark, the lift was completed in 1875. Built to speed up the movement of cargoes carrying salt, coal and clay between the Weaver Navigation and the Trent and Mersey Canal, described as the 'Cathedral of the Canals' his solution involved a revolutionary use of hydraulics.
We will continue to explore new ways to maximise the enjoyment of our visitors.
