Waterways for Wales
In 2003 we produced the consultation document, Waterways for Wales, at the request of the Welsh Assembly Government. The document sets out the positive contribution inland waterways can make to the future of Wales.
Its aims are to:
- Stimulate economic regeneration
- Act as a catalyst for Rural Recovery
- Develop Sustainable Living
- Promote the Vitality of Welsh Cultural Heritage
- Promote Wales to the Wider World
The waterways are an excellent resource; they are gateways to great diversity capable of creating sustainable development, whilst spurring economic regeneration and environmental enhancement. Through Waterways for Wales, we are working to protect and enhance a great shared resource. Already providing a major contribution to the regions tourism industry, our waterways can become internationally recognised assets. Chaired by Val Lloyd, 3 meetings a year are held in the national assembly, focussing solely on the future of our canals and rivers and supporting regional and local projects.
We are embarking on a fantastic journey, reinforcing the enduring successes of the original engineers who forged the waterways. Their legendary concepts and ideas transformed an already impressive landscape, changing the lives and fortunes of its communities. We are re-capturing this spirit of creativity and innovation for the benefit of generations to come.
